Clark, NJ History
Lets rewind and look at how it all began. Settlers moved west from Elizabethtown (present day Elizabeth) and were attracted by the fertile farmland along the Rahway River. In 1686, Dr. William Robinson bought 700 acres and became one of Clark’s first settlers, although at that time it was still Elizabethtown. Dr. Robinson’s home was preserved by the Clark Historical Society, and is now one of a dozen historic residences in town. The town has developed a Dr. William Robinson Plantation Museum. The museum highlights the life of a plantation owner in the 17th century.
Clark became the Fifth Ward of Rahway and remained until 1864. When the townspeople needed a name for their new community, they chose to honor Abraham Clark a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
