Welcome to the broad tree-lined streets of this “Norman Rockwell-like” community. With a population of 30,000, Westfield still has that charm studded small town atmosphere. Known for it’s vibrant downtown & excellent school system.Westfield is home to many NYC commuters. City dwellers looking to flee New York City for the suburbs gravitate to Westfield where they can shop, enjoy eateries of every sort, and steep oneself in culture whether it be concerts, plays, museums, you name it, or simply to just have fun. Westfield is picturesque, friendly, & safe yet still an easy commute to Manhattan and the boroughs.

Westfield is a modern rooted town with a rich history dating back to 1720. Originally known as the “West Fields of Elizabeth”, the town of Westfield got its humble beginnings from settlers wishing to find more land to farm.  By the early 1800’s, the area west of Elizabeth, including all or parts of the present towns of Scotch Plains, Mountainside, Fanwood, Cranford, Clark, Garwood, and Plainfield were called the “Township of Westfield”.  The present day Town of Westfield wasn’t formally created until 1903.

Westfield’s history is as rich and interesting as it is varied.  In June of 1777, during the Revolutionary War, British troops camped in town and many of our residents fought against and defeated the British in the Battle of Springfield.  In 1864, the Central Railroad of NJ came to town, providing the impetus for the growth in population that would forever change Westfield from a sleepy farming community into a suburban commuter town.

Today the town includes a bustling 18 block shopping and business district. The thriving downtown shopping district includes many major retailers, as well as, small boutiques, florists, deli’s & gourmet take-out bistros. Just to whet your appetite if you love to shop, conjure up an outdoor mall with stores like Lord & Taylor, The Gap, Kid’s Gap, Williams Sonoma, Victoria’s Secret, Chico’s, Ann Taylor, Alex and Ani, and Urban Outfitters just to name a few. You’ll be able to stop for lunch or dinner at one of the fine eateries including Theresa’s, Xocolatz, Ferraro’s, Mojave Grill, Chez Catherine…just to skim the surface. If it’s a caffeine fix you’re after, wander into Starbucks, sit down and have a Latte and one of their decadent desserts and surf the Internet while you relax.

This is a town that is all about its children with excellent sports and recreation programs as a complement to the renowned school system. The landscape includes many lush parks & golf courses for adults as well as children to enjoy. The Westfield Memorial Pool complex boasts 4 pools, tennis courts, and basketball hoops. The YMCA is a mecca for the physically fit with 2 indoor pools, a racket ball court, exercise facilities and also features a before and after school program for working parents. Scenic Mindowaskin Park located right in Westfield’s Downtown offers concerts in the summer, ice skating in the winter and a playground.

The Rialto Theater with its restored façade and art deco marquee is a great place for the entire family to enjoy the latest movies and then go down the street to the tempting Cold Stone Creamery.

With it’s cosmopolitan yet picturesque charm, Westfield is not just a great place to live, it’s a Destination!
