Fanwood has a total area of 1.342 square miles, all of which is land. The borough is bordered by Plainfield in the southwest and Scotch Plains in all other directions. The town has a population of approximately 7,300 people.
Many of the town’s residents commute daily to New York City. Fanwood has a station on New Jersey Transit’s Raritan Valley commuter rail line. NJ Transit also offers a full schedule of bus services from Fanwood to central and northern NJ and NYC.
Right across the train station you have Mara’s Bakery where you can enjoy hot or cold beverages, gelato, morning goodies, and delicious cheesecake, truffles, pies, and more mouth watering deserts.
On Martine Avenue and South Avenue you will find new gorgeous victorian style apartment building over shops and stores.
Children in Fanwood attend the wonderful Scotch Plains - Fanwood School District. The district consists of 6 elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school.
Fanwood has a cozy, small town feel. Fanwood is the type of town where everyone knows their neighbors, and new comers are welcomed into the neighborhood. People are very festive; no matter what the occasion is - Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas the town is always in the spirt and decorated. This is certainly a town you want to come live in.
Fanwood is believed to have got its name from Fanny Wood, a journalist who wrote about the area.
